Infrastructure software is the underlying plumbing that provides operational support for applications and networks including those involved in service oriented architecture, integration, application development tools, business process management platforms, middleware, security, data access and management, mobile and wireless, content management, system performance and management, compression and storage, etc. With the move to the Web 2.0, the network and the application are converging even more to better connect systems and users. There are many companies emerging that provide tools and infrastructure to deliver web-based applications and services to both consumers and the enterprise.
Application software is delivered as a packaged or hosted solution, and is more often sold to customers using a "Software as a Service" buisness model. These applications usually solve a specific business problem or function and often target vertical markets. Many enterprise applications require additional professional services; system integrators and consulting organizations are offering managed services on an outsourced basis to meet the needs of individual companies and IT environments. Using SOA and BPM based platforms and analytics technologies, applications are quickly becoming "composed" with reusable business services for more agile, dynamic business and customer solutions.
